WHAT COMES NEXT BELONGS TO THEM

A future with the student in the driver’s seat.

Explore further learning, work and everyday-life goals without deciding the student’s future for them.

Begin with an interest

  • Let the student choose something they want to investigate.
  • Separate an adult’s suggestion from the student’s stated goal.
  • Make room for uncertainty and for the plan to change.

Turn a possibility into a question

  • Ask a school counselor to verify course and graduation requirements.
  • Contact a program directly about its application and accessibility process.
  • For work exploration, identify one person or experience that can help the student learn more.

Choose a first step

  • Name a small action, its owner and a date.
  • Record what the student wants help with and what they want to do independently.
  • Revisit the plan with the student rather than using a score to declare readiness.
